Why are these fuckers allowed to block up the center of Dublin? And proof, if it was needed, that they don't know their way around the city. The two drivers are staging a sit-in in the Office of the Commission for Taxi Regulation on Fitzwilliam Square demanding a meeting with the Minister for Transport. He works in the Department of Transport which is on Kildare Street!

Quote:O'Connell St closed as taxi drivers protest

Two men involved in a sit-in protest at the office of the Commission for Taxi Regulation in Dublin have been served with High Court orders compelling them to leave.

The men have been protesting since 3pm yesterday afternoon over concerns about regulation of the taxi industry.

A spokesperson for the Irish Taxi Council, which the men are members of, said the organisation's solicitors are currently examining the orders deciding what to do.
Gardaí say traffic is severely restricted in Dublin city centre as a result of the action, which saw drivers around the country disrupt services in solidarity with the two men.

O'Connell Street is closed in both directions due to the protest, with northbound traffic being diverted onto Eden Quay.

Only buses can travel over O'Connell Bridge southbound, all other traffic must continue onto Eden Quay.

AA Roadwatch says that southbound traffic from Parnell Square is being diverted via Marlborough Street and Gardiner Street.

Luas Red Line services are only running between Tallaght and Smithfield due to the protests.

Taxi services remain disrupted at Dublin and Cork airports after over 400 taxis stopped work there at 8am this morning.

The DAA is advising passengers arriving on flights into Dublin to make alternative travel arrangements because of the protest.

Departing passengers are not affected as taxis are continuing to drop-off at the airport. Taxi services at Galway and Shannon are operating normally.

The President of the Irish Taxi Council earlier warned that drivers involved in an impromptu dispute could escalate their action, if their demands to meet the Minister for Transport are not met.

Frank Byrne said that the sit-in by the two taxi drivers would continue until a meeting with Noel Dempsey was secured.

He said drivers were calling for the implementation of reforms to the industry, which were drawn up by the Oireachtas Joint Transport Committee.

He claimed that taxi drivers are also protesting in Kerry, Galway, Waterford, Sligo, Donegal and Meath, and warned that the action could escalate further.

However, a spokesman for the Minister for Transport said the protest is doing nothing to address the challenges the industry is facing.

The spokesman said: 'Those involved in the actions yesterday and which are continuing today are strongly urged to resume discussions with the Commission for Taxi Regulation in a sustained effort to address the issues of concern.'

Taxi drivers gathered in Limerick's Pery Square this afternoon as part of the protest.

Around 100 drivers responded to a call to show solidarity with drivers in Dublin. Services were disrupted for a short time this afternoon, but have since resumed.

Seven people have been arrested in the Irish Republic over an alleged plot to kill a Swedish cartoonist for depicting the Prophet Muhammad, police say.
The four men and three women are all Muslim, according to media reports, though a police statement did not confirm this.
Cartoonist Lars Vilks had depicted the Prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog in the Nerikes Allehanda newspaper.
Islamic militants then put a $100,000 (£67,000) bounty on his head.
Irish police said the seven suspects were arrested after an investigation that also involved police in the US and other European countries.
The suspects ranged in age from their mid-20s to late-40s.
Ireland's RTE news network reported that five were detained in Waterford and two others in Cork.

I was walking through Temple Bar in the early hours of Sunday morning with my girlfriend. Infront of us there was a group of Gardai, some of which appeared to be talking to members of the public. There was one Sgt however who was just standing there, blocking other pedestrians from passing.

There was a parked car at the side of the road aswell, so my girlfriend and i couldnt simply have moved onto the road, we would have had to turn around and walked back around the long way.

I asked the Sgt if he would excuse us and let us past, to which he didn't reply. After my girlfriend then asked him he turned, looked at us for a moment, and then moved to the side.

I looked back over my shoulder at him as we walked off and he asked me if i had a problem with him.

I was just wondering if this attitude towards members of the public is replicated amongst other members of the AGS? (underlined by Admin) If the Sgt had actually been talking to someone, or doing something, i would have understood. But he simply ignored us and threw on the attitude when we asked him to let us through.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but is there not some general rule where if the Gardai is blocking pedestrians from passing by it is they who must move in rather than the ped?

'Firefighters left woman in mine shaft for six hours due to 'health and safety concerns'

An injured woman lay for six hours at the foot of a disused mine shaft because safety rules banned firefighters from rescuing her, an inquiry heard yesterday. As Alison Hume was brought to the surface by mountain rescuers she died of a heart attack.

A senior fire officer at the scene admitted that crews could only listen to her cries for help, after she fell down the 60ft shaft, because regulations said their lifting equipment could not be used on the public. A memo had been circulated in Strathclyde Fire and Rescue stations months previously stating that it was for use by firefighters only.

Christopher Rooney, the first senior fire officer at the scene in Galston, Ayrshire, in 2008, told the fatal accident inquiry at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court that it would have been possible to pull Ms Hume up had it not been for the memo. A paramedic volunteered to treat her but was prevented from being lowered. A mountain rescue team that was summoned freed Ms Hume, 44, a solicitor who had two children, but she died just as she was brought to the surface.

Mr Rooney, 51, who has retired from the fire service, was asked by Gregor Forbes, for Ms Hume’s family: “On the basis of the manpower and equipment available, is it your view it would have been possible for the firefighters to have brought the person to the surface before the mountain rescue team?” he replied: “Yes, I believe so.” Ms Hume had strayed off a path in a field and fallen into the former Goatfoot mine.

Mr Rooney said he had arrived at 2.30am but mist reduced visibility. Ms Hume’s family led him to the hole, which was partially concealed by vegetation. “We heard Alison making distressed noises,” Mr Rooney said.

A firefighter, Alexander Dunn, was lowered with oxygen and first-aid equipment. He was with Ms Hume for four hours until the mountain team arrived. He told the inquiry that the time taken to rescue her was “excessive”. Mr Dunn, 51, who is retired, was critical of the subsequent fire service debriefing, saying it failed to address key points.

The inquiry continues.

Source

Disgusting. I hope the spineless managers that allowed this woman to suffer (on account of a memo) are fired and personally held to account in the civil court, likewise their Fire & Rescue service.

Our emergency services now have people in charge who view their jobs (because its not a vocation for these bureaucrats) as akin to running a supermarket; perfomance indicators, memos, customer satisfaction surveys and all the other bollocks that is putting emergency services personnel and the public at risk.

They are risk averse and terrified to make a decision for fear of repercussions that might affect their career progression.

Scrap the whole system and lets start putting people in charge who aren't afraid to make a decision and ignore bullshit policy such as that which cost this woman her life.

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has decided that those who don't pay certain fines will have their television or other belongings seized rather than be sent to jail.

Minister Ahern is ammending the fines bill in the Dáil, which will also see such offenders named and shamed.
If the sheriff can't source goods to the value of the fine, the court will impose between 30 and 100 hours of community service.
Minister Ahern says the move towards seizing belongings of individuals who don't pay fines is because it is cheaper than sending them to jail for seven days.

A 17-year-old boy arrested for leading gardaí on a 150kmph car chase along the M50 in Dublin, was remanded in custody today at the Children's Court.

The high speed pursuit began after the teenager narrowly missed running over a garda, it is alleged.

The boy replied “that is a load of s***” when he was charged with driving a stolen Mazda 323 and reckless endangerment of life, over the alleged chase, which began in at a car park on the Kylemore Road, in west Dublin, in the early hours of February 24 last.

Outlining the allegations, Garda Gerard Glynn said that he and a colleague signalled the vehicle to stop when they found it in a car park.

The driver halted but revved the engine again and started to speed off as one garda was walking in front of the car.

“He had to jump out of the way for his safety, a pursuit ensued,” said Garda Glynn.

The boy's mother wept in court Judge Ann Ryan heard that the boy allegedly sped along the M50 northbound until he reached the M1, then passed Dublin Airport and took the turn off for Swords.

“He reached speeds of up to 150kmph, conditions were wet and it was raining. At the Swords exit he lost control and collided with a roundabout.”

Judge Ryan held that the case was too serious to be kept in the jurisdiction of the juvenile court. She held that it should be sent forward to the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, which can, on conviction, impose lengthier sentences.

He was remanded in custody pending a book of evidence.

The judge accepted jurisdiction for one of the teen's other less serious motor theft charges for which a plea has yet to be entered and he will appear again next week.

Garda Amanda Lynch told the court that it was alleged that on October 28 last, the boy was seen pushing a car, in the Ballyfermot area, in west Dublin. He started the engine and “took off at high speed” as gardaí signalled to him to pull over.

Garda Lynch said the teenager drove along Cherry Orchard Drive, “mounted a footpath and drove over a public park, and proceeded down onto another footpath.”

It was alleged the teenager abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot at Croftwood Grove, in Ballyfermot.

A bit of sense from our Judicary for a change.

Quote:Court rules CCTV evidence valid

A man who sought to halt his trial because CCTV footage of his alleged crime is no longer available has lost his application after a High Court judge ruled that evidence from a Garda who was monitoring the CCTV cameras at the time is admissible.

Mr Justice John Hedigan said a garda viewing an incident on CCTV is akin to someone looking through binoculars or through “a special window.”

He was dismissing proceedings by John Stirling, Moorefield Drive, Clondalkin, Dublin, who is charged with criminal damage and public order offences arising out of an alleged incident at Aston Quay, Dublin, in the early hours of March 3rd, 2009.

It is claimed a garda monitoring the Pearse Street station CCTV saw a group of young people allegedly kicking a telephone box and various windows and communicated what he saw to officers on the ground who subsequently arrested Mr Stirling in the Temple Bar area.

After a District Court judge refused an application to dismiss the charges against Mr Stirling on grounds the CCTV footage was no longer available, Mr Stirling brought his High Court judicial review proceedings.

In his judgment, Mr Justice Hedigan said it was unfortunate the CCTV footage was no longer available.

The loss of the footage should not have occurred and was “indicative of a certain inefficiency on the part of gardaí” over the proper storage of this type of evidence. he said. It was imperative procedures be “tightened up”.

However, the missing footage was not fatal to this case which could not be regarded as a usual “missing evidence” matter, he said. By means of elaborate technology now deployed in Dublin, it was possible for gardaí to see “far beyond the field of vision to which they would normally be limited” as if they were looking through “a special window or through binoculars.”

The garda monitoring the cameras could give evidence in the trial and could be questioned about the accuracy of his recall, acuity of his view, quality of the picture and his opportunity to observe, the judge said.

A trial judge could ask to see an example of similar footage and would have to ensure the trial was conducted in a constitutional manner, he added.

THE GOVERNMENT was in the final stages of preparing legislation protecting from liability those going to the aid of injured people, Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern told the Dáil.

He said it would cover those who, acting with good intentions, assisted people who were injured or ill as a result of an accident or emergency. Such people would not have to fear being sued, he added.

“The Government also recognises that fear of civil liability can hamper volunteerism and may prevent individuals and groups from providing assistance and services to others,’’ said Mr Ahern. “And without greater legal certainty in this area, the concern is that the perception may continue that there is a risk of civil liability to those who provide assistance or service on an ex gratia basis.’’

This, potentially, said Mr Ahern, discouraged volunteerism and might raise insurance premiums for volunteer groups.

Changes in society, pace of life and working patterns meant volunteerism was under stress and greater clarity in the law would benefit the State and Irish society as a whole, he added.

The Minister was responding to a Fine Gael Private Member’s Bill, moved by Billy Timmins, to give protection to members of the public or organisations assisting someone injured or ill.

Mr Timmins said the introduction of the Civil Liability (Good Samaritans and Volunteers) 2009 Bill was motivated by the growing use of defibrillators in the community and the concerns people had about possible litigation.

Mr Ahern suggested the House should defer a second reading of the Fine Gael Bill for six months. The Government was not opposing it, and he thanked Mr Timmins and justice spokesman Charles Flanagan for promoting the principle of what was involved.

'Respectable' family man given eight-year sentence in heroin case
Tuesday, March 02, 2010

A married father-of-six who delivered nearly €1m of heroin to a Dublin criminal has been sentenced to eight years after his case had been adjourned to allow him attend his twins’ Christening.

Gardaí at the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation observed their operation’s target take a black sack full of heroin from Brian Perry’s van at a car park in Templeogue.

Perry (aged 28) of Cushlawn Drive, Tallaght pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possessing nearly five kilogrammes of heroin worth €993,080 at the Spawell car park on September 30, 2008. He has seven previous convictions for minor traffic offences.

Detective Garda Fiona Connaghton told Mr Dominic McGinn BL, prosecuting, that her investigation team had been focusing on the other man as part of an operation targeting Drimnagh gangs.

She said colleagues had set up surveillance outside this man’s home and followed him to the car park, where they saw him pull up beside Perry’s Ford Transit and take the bag containing heroin from the passenger side.

The surveillance team stopped both vehicles as they began moving off and seized the drugs.

Det Gda Connaghton said Perry took full responsibility for his “one-off” role in the drugs trade.

She said he claimed he had a €5,000 cocaine debt, that he did not know the other man and had presumed the drugs he was transporting were worth between €50,000 and €100,000.

The detective garda agreed with defence counsel, Mr Garrett McCormack BL (with Mr Brendan Grehan SC), that Perry had worked hard all his life and came from a respectable family.

She accepted Perry had engaged in a “one-off” job to get rid of the drug debt.

Judge Katherine Delahunt had adjourned sentencing Perry last month, having heard all the evidence, to allow him attend his twins’ christening.

She accepted the garda evidence that Perry had not been a member of an organised crime gang and had not been the target of the operation.

“I accept that you were a courier fulfilling an essential role for serious criminals involved in organised criminal activity and as such acted as a barrier between gardai and these people,” Judge Delahunt said.

She said as these people placed their trust in Perry she was satisfied that, although he was not at the highest rung of the ladder in the operation, he was not near the lowest either.

Judge Delahunt said she had taken into account Perry’s good work history, his plea, co-operation with the gardaí and history of drug abuse before she suspended the final two years of the sentence for four years.

INVESTIGATION: THE GARDA investigation into practices at Anglo Irish Bank is “unlikely” to result in any criminal charges or arrests in the short to medium term, it has emerged.

Senior Garda sources have told The Irish Times that despite speculation in the financial sector and the media that criminal charges are imminent, this is not the case.

“We’re happy with the way it’s going but this is going to be a slow-burner,” said a Garda source.

Another said there was no realistic prospect of any arrests or charges in the weeks ahead.

“It’s unlikely there’ll be any arrests or charges in even the next few months,” said the source.

“That time frame might change but, based on what we know now, it will be months before there are arrests. There’s a large team working on it and they got extra personnel in the past few weeks, but there is a lot to get through before it can be progressed in the direction of particular individuals.”

News that criminal charges are unlikely to arise soon comes days after the one-year anniversary of the start of the Garda inquiry.

Fine Gael’s justice spokesman Charlie Flanagan said those under investigation contributed to the financial crisis which had been passed on to the taxpayer. Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern should explain “the reason behind the delay in bringing charges against senior bankers”, he said.

“Can he further explain why, in many cases, senior bankers have not even been questioned?”

On February 25th, 2009, the Financial Regulator formally asked the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation to join the criminal investigation into the bank.

Gardaí are also assisting with a separate investigation by the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement into possible breaches of company law.

The regulator referred two issues to the Garda – deposit transfers of €7.45 billion into Anglo by Irish Life Permanent to flatter its balance sheet and secret loans of €451 million to 10 Anglo customers to buy shares in the bank held indirectly by businessman Seán Quinn which had the effect of propping up its share price.

Anybody convicted in relation to any market abuse offences faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment and/or a fine of up to €10 million.

Also under investigation are the hidden loans to Anglo’s former chairman Seán FitzPatrick.
A number of Garda raids have been carried out at Anglo premises. A large quantity of computers and documents have been seized and is being examined as part of the investigation.
